The Don Juan Coffee Tour in Monteverde has its roots in the legacy of Don Juan Cruz, who was born in 1937 and was among the first pioneering farmers to settle in the Monteverde region. In 2005, one of his sons and a nephew opened a small coffee house using beans from Don Juan’s modest farm. Visitors were so intrigued by the coffee-making process that they began asking questions—not just about the brew, but about the entire journey from bean to cup.
To satisfy this curiosity, the family brought a live coffee plant into the café. But that only sparked more interest, so they began taking guests to the farm itself. That’s how the Don Juan Coffee Tour officially began in 2006. Since then, it’s grown into a beloved experience that blends Costa Rican culture, agriculture, and storytelling—all with a side of fresh brew.

Coffee + Chocolate + Sugar Cane Tour
Don Juan Tours invites you to live a unique experience exploring the traditional crafts of coffee, chocolate and sugar cane on a mostly covered tour through its farms and plantations. It begins with an immersion in the history of Costa Rican coffee and the ancestral methods of its production. Discover the art of growing and harvesting beans, and learn how generations have perfected techniques such as washing and drying to obtain the high-quality coffee that Costa Rica is known for.
Then, immerse yourself in the chocolate-making process: roast, blend, and grind the cocoa beans to create a delicious all-natural chocolate. Throughout the tour, you will enjoy fresh cacao fruit and delicious cane juice. At the end of the tour, a tasting of coffee produced on the farm will allow you to taste the result of the whole process that you have learned. Celebrating Costa Rica's rich heritage, this tour promises a truly memorable experience.
