El Trapiche Tour is a family-run business located in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Its story began in 1948, when Mr. Higinio Santamaría moved from San Ramón de Alajuela to Monteverde with the goal of establishing a traditional sugarcane mill. Thirteen years later, his son Juan Santamaría acquired a diesel-powered mill, modernizing the process. However, it wasn't until 2005 that the third generation, led by Juan de Dios Santamaría Hidalgo, opened the doors to tourism. Since then, the tour has offered an educational and cultural experience that showcases the traditional production of sugar, coffee, and chocolate—highlighting the richness of Costa Rican heritage.

The Trapiche Tour offers a delightful journey through Costa Rica's rich agricultural heritage, showcasing the traditional methods of producing some of the country's most beloved products: chocolate, sugar cane, and coffee.
Visitors are treated to an immersive experience, starting with the lush sugar cane fields where they learn about its versatile applications and get to taste its raw sweetness. The tour then meanders through aromatic coffee plantations, revealing the intricate process of cultivation and roasting that leads to the perfect cup of coffee. The adventure continues with a visit to the cacao plantations, where the magic of chocolate begins from the very first seedling and culminates in the delicious final product that everyone adores.
Participants also get hands-on experience with sugar cane juice extraction and candy-making, crafting sweet treats from the freshly harvested cane. The tour concludes with a snack of local cuisine, featuring 'gallos' with 'picadillo', a traditional dish that perfectly complements the artisanal beverages, rounding off a truly authentic Costa Rican experience.
